From a peat production area to a biodiverse wetland

The Heinäsuo after-use wetland in Kiuruvesi is a good example of how a former peat production area can be given a new life. The wetland provides a habitat for many birds and other wetland species. The area is part of Neova’s post-production site management, which aims to create conditions for biodiversity to recover and thrive after production has ended.

A wetland rich in wildlife

The Heinäsuo wetland has been leased to Kiuruvesi-based photographer Jorma Kärkkäinen, who has been actively observing the area throughout this year, documenting its wildlife and seasonal changes with his camera.

A wide variety of birds and mammals have been observed in the area. The wetland is home to black grouse, waterfowl, waders and swans, among others, while mammals observed in the area include otters, foxes, lynx, wolves, bears and deer. The birdlife varies with the seasons, and the wetland also serves as a resting place for migratory birds.

“There is always something new to see at the wetland. Nature is reclaiming the area surprisingly quickly, and it is wonderful to watch different birds and other animals discover the place,” Kärkkäinen says.

Wildlife observed from photography hides

Kärkkäinen has built several wildlife photography hides in the area. Their locations are chosen with factors such as bird display sites, water areas, background scenery and animal trails in mind. Wildlife photography requires patience, as photographers may spend several hours in a hide, remaining quiet and as still as possible. The area attracts photographers from different parts of Finland, ranging from individual nature photographers to photography clubs.

Through photographs, the life of the wetland can also be shared with others. Kärkkäinen’s images showcase the rich birdlife of Heinäsuo and the new life that has emerged in the wetland.

The wetland continues to develop

Kärkkäinen also has ideas for further developing the area. Plans include clearing shrubs, developing game fields, improving shoreline areas and increasing areas of open water. The aim is to improve habitats for waterfowl and other species while allowing the wetland ecosystem to continue to develop.

The Heinäsuo wetland demonstrates how new ecological value can emerge on a former production site. At the same time, it has developed into an interesting destination for nature photography and a place where changes in nature can be observed at close range.
