Neova and Hankkija awarded GMP+ FSA certification for the ProHumi® supply chain

The peat-based feed pellet manufactured at Neova Oy’s pellet plant has been awarded GMP+ Feed Safety Assurance (FSA) certification, covering both production and sales. At the same time, Hankkija Oy, which further processes and markets the product, has received GMP+ FSA certification for its Turku plant, where the product is packaged and sold as ProHumi® feed material.

The joint certification enables a consistent supply chain that meets international feed safety requirements, from raw material through to the finished product. The GMP+ FSA system supports feed safety, quality and traceability throughout the value chain.

High hygiene standards and traceability throughout the supply chain

The feed production processes of both companies are based on rigorous quality control and hygiene requirements throughout production. The feed peat is produced separately from specially selected peat intended specifically for this purpose, with particular attention paid to cleanliness and hygiene. With the entire supply chain from production to packaging covered by GMP+ FSA certification, customers can rely on the safety, consistent quality and traceability of the product.

A natural solution supporting animal well-being

The feed business is one of Neova’s new business areas focusing on high-value applications of peatland biomass. Since 2019, one of the company’s product development areas has been the use of peat as a source of fibre in livestock feed. Hankkija has been a product development partner in the project since 2022, and ProHumi® feed material was launched for commercial use in 2024.

The positive properties of peat have long been recognized through its use as animal bedding, and these benefits have also been demonstrated in feed applications. Product development work has identified an optimal peat quality with a fibre composition particularly suitable for feed use.

Feeding trials have provided convincing evidence of the suitability of peat selected according to strict quality criteria for use in feed, particularly as an enrichment material for piglets. When used for enrichment, ProHumi® Farm provides pigs with meaningful activity and satisfies their natural need to root and explore.

Feeding trials with weaned piglets have shown that the use of peat pellets as enrichment material can improve piglet growth. ProHumi® feed material therefore offers several practical benefits related to animal well-being and production performance. Practical trials have also shown promising results in poultry, particularly broilers.
